Fertilizer can come in natural and synthetic forms. Compost would be a form of natural fertilizer, while 10-10-10 would be a manufactured combination supplied for easy distribution into a garden or plant base. Most fertilizers are represented by the 3 main elements for plant growth: N –nitrogen P- potassium, and K- phosphorus.

10-10-10 would provide equal amounts of all three elements, plus smaller amounts of other elements and fillers.
