Use groundcovers, and or mulch in your garden

Ground covers are plants that grow to shallow heights (often less than 12”) and tend to spread horizontally further than its vertical growth. Ground covers can often have shallow but very dense root systems. There are a variety of groundcovers available for the perennial garden of just about any style.
