Favourite plants AtoZ: Ajuga

Ajuga, also known as Bugleweed is one of my favourites for those hard to grow shady areas. It is also hardy to foot traffic. It can be easily grown in any soil, and can even survive some clay areas. Ajuga can be aggressive, and can spread fast. It likes shade, and can handle a little sun too. Keep in mind it flowers best in moist areas, so don’t expect too much from it in a rock garden (I have seen it work though).  This little purple plant will spread 12″-18″, and blooms most in spring, but can continue blooming through out the summer. It is easy to divide and transplant. It handles foot traffic, but don’t plant it under extensive traffic.
