Discover your Garden “Essence”

Last summer looking outside at that dull empty space you envisioned your boring and unused backyard as a beautiful inviting haven…

What was that vision? What did it look like? Who was using it? To whom did it appeal? What were you and others doing there?

These are some of the questions you want to consider when making changes to any part of your household, so let’s dig a little deeper to help you find your landscape and garden “essence”.

1.       Lifestyle – What will you most likely use this space for?

2.       Users – Who besides the decision makers will be using this space?

3.       Budget – How much are you willing to spend to get what you want?

Now that you have answered the three basic questions that can be related to any area of your home, let’s break it down a bit more.

1.       Prioritize space allocation and importance for the following items: Lawn, garden(s), Hard Scaping (patio/walkway/deck), pool/hot tub, lighting, playground equipment, fountain, pond, other.

2.       Decide your purpose(s) for the space: entertainment, child’s play, retreat, privacy, nourishment, aesthetics, and seasonal colour. (You may have more than one purpose).

3.       Establish the amount of time you want to spend “tending” vs. “enjoying” your new outdoor space.

You have a budget, use of space, and who will use it. The purpose is clear, and you know how much time you want to spend using the space versus taking care of it. With these items in place, you can choose a theme that best serves your landscape and garden “essence”.

While finding your essence, you will learn whether you prefer a FORMAL or INFORMAL design concept.

FORMAL style tends to favour manicured lawns, and geometric shapes, straight lines and symmetrical patterns.

Popular Sub Themes for FORMAL: Asian, Contemporary, Topiary, Zen, Nourishing, Modern, Spiritual

INFORMAL style encourages the use of curves, free flowing plants, and softer lines that lead one around the space.

Popular Sub Themes for INFORMAL: Asian, Zen, Woodlot, Naturalized, Rock gardens, Romantic, Perennial garden, Tropical, Wildlife Habitat, Nourishing, Modern, Spiritual

Now that you know what you want, it’s time to find someone to help your vision come true!
